Momofuku Ando, the inventor of instant ramen, was laid to rest today near Osaka, Japan.
“Nissin Food Products Co. plans to recreate the atmosphere of outer space in a corporate funeral scheduled for Tuesday for Momofuku Ando, the inventor of instant ramen and the founder of the firm, who died at age 96 on Jan. 5.”

Beverly writes in from Ohio…
“… I would love the Ramen Co[s]. to think about maybe selling the seasoning packets inside of the noodles in a seperate (sic) form of seasonings only. The flavor packets are wonderful and flavorful and they could market them by themselves as a seasoning especially the spicy version. People could add these flavorings to burgers other meals etc. If you could tell me if I have the right site or maybe let me know what you think I would appreciate it.”
My first thought was, hey this would be cool! But my second thought is, who is going to want to pay $3 for a seasoning container when you can just buy noodles and keep the packets?

I figure I had ramen when I was around 7 or 8. When I was a bit older it was one of the few things I could cook for myself, so I ate it alot. I also ate it when camping with the Boy Scouts, since my patrol leader’s food was always terrible. I left ramen for sometime in high school, but I was back on the noodle in college.

The University of Colorado’s Campus Press (maybe not actually affiliated with the school, I don’t know), did a write-up with 3 recipes for top-ramen and a video (quicktime). Unfortunately, the author failed to realize that I am actually a student at the University of Colorado. Probably not her fault, its not like I advertise it, but I am a masters candidate, finishing in December of this year (would have been May if it weren’t for some significant lack of statistics knowledge on my part).
Anyway, I enjoyed the video, the recipes were pretty standard fare.

Interesting recipe, not from a reader, and not mine, but one of the few I’ve seen that involves duck. All of the ingredients are in metric, so for US cooks, use Google (below) to convert.
Ramen noodles with barbecued duck

Convert to US Units by googling for something like “300g to oz”.

Can’t think of a name for this creation, which does sound pretty good! PS – Can anyone think of the word that was misspelled when this recipe was originally submitted to me? It’s impossible to spell, I had to use google.

- 1 packet of Oriental style noodles
- 4 Slices of Bacon chopped
- A Few Chopped Green Onions (optional)
- 1 Dash of Worcestershire sauce
Fry up the bacon and then drain the grease, keeping 1 or 2 table spoons. In the pan add the seasoning packet and stir. Prepare the ramen according to the directions, and then pour this wonderful fluid all over. Top with a few green onions and a dash of Worcestershire and you have a meal that will make you useless on the couch in no time!
Note: The bacon should be chopped and you can do this either before or after cooking it. After is probably easier.

My unposted recipe box hit the magic number of 50 today. So I am finally going to get to work on posting them! Thanks to Tara for this, although she’s probably already graduated by now.

- 3 packets of Ramen (I like to use chicken flavor)
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 chopped onion
- 2 cans stewed tomatoes
- 1 small package of Ranch dressing mix
Brown ground beef with onions and drain. Boil water and cook noodles until done, then drain the water and toss with 1 flavor packet (you can use another one if you like more saltiness). Add seasoned noodles, tomatoes (with the juice) and ranch dressing mix to the ground beef mixture. Stir well, and simmer for 5 minutes. Enjoy!

I really enjoy this site, and they did a piece on ramen, called “how much is inside”? The goal is basically to see how much you really get when you buy them, in an amusing way.
