Do you buy the fancy stuff, one pack at a time or do you buy them by the pallet from Sams Club?
Well, I’d never eat it, but maybe someone thinks this sounds good? (Sorry, not a milk fan).

- 1 package of Nissin ramen “spicy” flavor
- Fong Kee unsweetened fresh soy milk
- 1 capful of Bernstein’s Light Fantastic “Classico Italian” dressing
- one or two sprinkles of chili pepper flakes
- one or two small handfuls of crushed bottom-of-the-bag pieces of Padrino’s Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips
Break the ramen block and crumble inside microwaveable soup container or bowl. Add the oil and sesame packet from the ramen package. Next, pour soy milk to top of ingredients or 3/4 the way up to the top of the soup container. Stir. Add the Bernstein’s dressing, chili pepper flakes, and tortilla chip pieces. Put in microwave and cook on high for three minutes. When finished, take out of microwave and let cool for a few minutes and then eat!
Should this be “Hawaiian Ramen?”

- 2 packs of pork or oriental ramen noodles
- 1 small can of spam
- 1 can of pineapple chunks (drained)
- Teriyaki sauce
- minced garlic
- dried onion flakes
Cook noodles as directed. Add diced spam & pineapple to noodles, heat and stir until everything is warm. Season with the remaining ingredients to taste. Frozen or fresh broccoli is also good in this recipe.
Fran Henry (no relation to Fran Drescher) doesn’t like ramen, and she wants YOU to know about it! Among the arguments: It’s high in calories, high in fat, high in sodium. I may agree with points 2 and 3, but 400 calories for lunch isn’t bad for you, sorry Fran. Also, if I lived somewhere where the river has been known to catch on fire, I might not consider ramen a threat to my health…
Shawn from Iowa State University wrote in with an idea: Ramen flavored chips. This would be like eating raw ramen in the bag (with seasoning). I figure we could have beef, chicken, shrimp, and lots of other flavors. Personally, I’m a Salt&Vinegar chip person myself (my wife hates them), and I’m not sure about Chicken Flavored chips. What do you guys think?

- 2 packages of Shrimp or Chicken flavored Ramen
- Shrimp [chicken or other white meat can be substituted]
- 2 lemons
- Your favorite fresh vegetables, works well with
- red or green pepper
Make Ramen by following directions on package. While ramen cooks, begin to fry meat in a small amount of butter. After ramen finishes, strain all water out of noodles, add the noodles to the to meat in pan. Cut lemons and squeeze juice into the meat and noodles (the more the better!) Cut vegetables into small squares and toss into frying pan (you can pre-cut the veggies of course). Cover pan and let cook until the veggies are soft. Remember to keep the pan on a low temperature to avoid burning noodles. Also, remember to stir throughout the cooking process. Take noodle/meat/veggie mix out of pan and reapply remaining lemon juice to top. Serve with fresh bread and white wine (if appropriate)!
Since I have today off, I decided to get some instant ramen at Target to eat while my wife is at work. For $.99, I purchased a Maruchan Yakisoba Teriyaki Flavor microwave bowl. It cooks in the microwave for 4 minutes and then sits for 1 and was extremely easy to make. The seasoning goes in last, and as I poured it, I smelled the overwhelming smell of cinnamon! This was quite unexpected, but oddly, it doesn’t taste like cinnamon (or much like teriyaki either). There is no meat in this bowl, and the quantity is enough to be part of a meal, but probably not a full one.
My overall feeling is that these are quality noodles, but I find the seasoning to be quite an odd flavor. I will finish what I have, but will probably try the other flavors (I’ve seen chicken flavor, but there may be more) next time!
I have a few comments in this article by Lana Berkowitz, regarding Momofuku Ando’s passing. The focus of the article is how many people ate ramen and what they did with it. I was even able to get my wife mentioned (since she’s from Houston).
Mr Momofuku Ando, the inventor of instant ramen died on January 5, 2007. There are plenty of websites with his history (here and here), so I will not repeat their content, but I did want to offer some comments.
Ramen noodles have become a staple food source for many segments of the population. They are so versatile that you can make a meal in 3 minutes for 25 cents, or a meal in 3 hours for 25 dollars. In either case, we owe these meals to Mr Momofuku Ando, who mastered his flash-frying method in 1958, thereby creating the instant ramen market.
Instant Ramen is more than a food for cash-strapped college students (although thats where many of us “picked up the habit”). My neighbor’s health-conscious (and pregnant) wife has gone back to ramen as a comfort food. I offer my final proof of the widespread consumption of ramen, with this data from the Wikipedia: an estimated 70 Billion servings were sold in 2004. That’s enough ramen for about 11 servings per person per year! So, when you consider that ramen is just a simple food or a minor invention, think of what other things in the world have grown from 1 to 70,000,000,000 servings in the past 49 years.
Thank you Mr Momofuku Ando, for many great meals and for being the cause for this website’s existence.
